You might have heard this track called “Mateo” by Yohuna on a number of blogs earlier this week. At first listen I immediately fell in love with it and when entire Revery EP had it’s official online and cassette release yesterday I didn’t have to think too long about getting it. Yohuna is 19 year old Johanne Swanson from Wisconsin/New Mexico and this is her debut release (it makes me feel old when people younger than me are making such beautiful things).

If I would have to describe Revery in two words only, it would have to be misleading vunerability. Just take a track like “Keep Apnea” as an example. It starts off with Johanne’s voice interweaving with wind-like sounds and subtle and playful percussion, but only after a few seconds this percussion becomes more powerful and little bits of noise start to creep in. It does seem like Yohuna’s music is vulnerable, but there is a hidden power beneath all of it.

In terms of time this EP comes at a perfect time as well. The darkest part of winter is over and we can slowly start looking forward to that wonderful time called spring (my all time favourite season). Yohuna’s songs still have the sadness of winter time (probably due to the fact that she wrote the songs when moving away from her home in Wisconsin in the fall), but also possess a hopefulness for something better, that hidden power I talked about before.

The digital release of Revery counts four tracks, while the cassette release has an additional song called “Adonis” on the B-side. It’s a collaborative track with Vacation Dad and it’s a drone song that is almost as long as all of the other tracks combined. You can get it for free at said artist’s bandcamp.

So, to recapitulate: you can either buy one of the 50 cassettes for $6, or you can get the digital copy for $1, all on Yohuna’s bandcamp page. She also announced on her tumblr that anyone who has “any trouble getting the songs/can’t afford it” can e-mail her to work something out because she wants “everyone that wants it to have it”. Listen to B-track “Adonis” here:
